Orthognathic Surgery

Orthognathic Surgery

Orthognathic surgery or “corrective jaw surgery” is performed to correct a wide range of skeletal and dental irregularities. Incisions are made inside the mouth and precision bone cuts are made to enable repositioning of the upper and/or lower jaws into the correct position. After the jaws are placed into the correct position, they are internally fixed with titanium plates and screws, and soft tissue closed over the top. This is chiefly done to improve chewing but can also improve facial appearance or breathing.

Common jaw problems may include jaws that are too small or large and are mismatched to the opposing jaw. Often this develops as a person grows but can also be due to trauma or disease.
In most cases, jaw surgery is done in conjunction with braces to correct teeth that are malpositioned or misaligned. Dr Cho will work closely with your orthodontist to form the best treatment plan for you.

Dr Cho has undertaken additional fellowship training in orthognathic surgery, and has gained his knowledge, experience and skills from both within Australia and overseas. He is well positioned to expertly assess and diagnose your underlying jaw problem and perform your surgery to the highest standard.
