Wisdom Teeth
Wisdom teeth or third molars are usually the last teeth to erupt into the mouth. It is very common to have insufficient space for these teeth to come through properly, leaving them wedged or “impacted”. Problems caused by impacted wisdom teeth are infection of the gums, pain, swelling, cyst formation, resorption, food trapping and decay of the adjacent molar teeth. Impacted wisdom teeth are close to major nerves supplying to the jaw, teeth, tongue, lip and chin.
Removal of wisdom teeth is a very common procedure performed by Dr Cho. Your dentist may refer you to Dr Cho to have the teeth surgically removed. Dr Cho has extensive experience in the removal of wisdom teeth. At your consultation, he will take a thorough history, examination and review any x-rays you have of your mouth. Dr Cho will advise if any further investigations are needed.
During your consultation, Dr Cho will discuss with you the procedure and any associated risks. He will also advise you of what to expect afterwards. Dr Cho will discuss with you the options to remove your wisdom teeth and tailor a treatment plan best suited to your needs.
Procedures may be performed under local anaesthesia with injections to numb the teeth, gums and adjacent structures so you do not feel any discomfort.
More often though, it is necessary to have impacted wisdom teeth removed in hospital under general anaesthetic. You will be asleep for the duration of the procedure. You will be admitted on the day of surgery and go home afterwards if you are well.
